Pushkar Day 1

November 22, 2007 -

Our camp

We stayed at the Pushkar Fort. They had several hotel rooms, but we opted to stay in the "Deluxe Swiss Tents." They had beds and separate "bathrooms" with running cold water and "toilets." We had to bucket flush the toilets and bucket bath, but it was actually really enjoyable.

Our tents...

We had tents 2 and three. The first and second in the picture.

The Dining Tent

We were served breakfast, lunch and dinner here

D rock climbing

The kids made great friends on this trip

A puppet theater

The first camel cart ride...

The caravan...

to the Camel Fair

"Local" accomodations

Close up

Meal time

Gypsy kids...

just watching the caravan go by

10 rupees? ... Soap?

All the gypsy kids were asking for 10 rupees...if we replied "no" they would ask for soap. Dave couldn't suppress the need to say they were asking for "fancy creams and lotions." (That's a Nacho quote)

The Gypsy Camp

This is there everyday existance... Count your blessings!

National Geo moment

Make picture? 10 rupees.

They would all say "Make picture...10 rupees?" which means...take my picture and give me 10 rupees.

A Camel Fair...

literally! There was a section of the fair that was really a fair with rides and everything. They even parachuted guys over the "stadium" each day we were there. Much to my children's dismay... we avoided the fair. Like I've said before: "OSHA" doesn't live here!

Cooking dinner

Camel fairgrounds

Is this my life?

I can't tell you how surreal it was to be riding through this scene.

Real India...

unfortunately, this is what a lot of India looks like. The inside of people's homes are usually very clean, but right outside looks like a war zone... as one man said to Dave who asked him about his littering: "It is our tradition."

Everyone wants a goat ride...

Snake charming...

for real... they say the fangs were removed, but still...

Who needs shopping carts?

Going home from work?

Sunset

Look at the Moon Daddy!

Dancing girl

The Pushkar Fort had nightly local entertainment which was very energetic. We really enjoyed it.

More dancing girls

The Band

And the crowd joined in...

B feeling the beat

Fire eating

Breathing fire

Even the puppet fire dances

D watching the puppet show.
